SPANISH MACKEREL ON FLY ROD- rolling tarpon- 30milesOUT fish'n TV

on this episode of 30milesOUT-
i really had been wanting to take the larger fly rods off shore and get a shot at some schooling spanish mackerel... dave and justin came down from new mexico with a bunch of killer 9-12wt fly rods... sage, g loumis , loops , you name it... they were ready to roll... we stayed at clark's water front motel in port 'o conner tx... we left the dock at day break in my blazer bay 2170.... we left the intercoastal jetties at day break and headed out to the big jettys.... when we got to the end of the big jettys the sun was just breaking... right at the end of the south jetty there were tarpon rolling everywhere!!!! i thought we were gonna have a record setting tarpon episode on our hands! the tarpon were busting bait, rolling, tail slaping, everywhere!
we got out the heavy 12wt fly rods and began to cast sinking lines down a little deeper at the silver kings... no hits... we got out some floating lines with top water flys.... no tarpon.... we were getting a little frustrated but the excitement kept us going.... we thru at those fish for an hour or so with not one hit or jump... so, we decided to head out to BIG MAMA! that is what i call the large rig 10 miles straight out of port o conner jetties... the seas were calm and the water at the oil rig looked good... then we saw our first school of spanish ! it was a big school.. we hoped there would be a king mackerel or 2 in that frenzy as well... we got out the 10wt fly rods and began to cast epoxy flys at the busting fish... we would run the bay boat up current of the school... kill the motor and drift right past the frenzy... it didnt take long to hook up ... we caught alot of spanish that day... never saw any kings or cobia but the spanish macks were a blast.... dave did a good tips and tricks in this episode... he covered how to make pvc fly rod holders on a "t" top.. good idea.. check it out .... super fun offshore fishing trip with some great guys....
